Solar Output Drops in Winter in Multan: Normal or a Fault?
Once the mornings turn foggy and the days shorten, solar owners across Punjab start asking why the numbers fall. A drop in solar output in winter is expected, but a few real faults look exactly the same on the screen, so it helps to know the difference.
Why Winter Output Falls
Days are shorter, so the panels have fewer hours of useful light. The sun also sits lower in the sky, so the light reaches the panels at a shallower angle and is weaker. Fog and haze scatter some of what is left. Cold air does help panels run a little more efficiently, but it does not make up for the lost daylight.
What Is Normal
- A lower daily total than you saw in summer.
- A slower start in the morning after fog, with the peak coming later.
- A visible dip on cloudy or hazy days.
- Output rising again within a day or two when the sky clears.
What Is Not Normal
- Output that sits well below a neighbour with a similar system on the same day.
- A sudden drop from one clear day to the next with no change in the weather.
- A fault light, error message or alarm on the inverter.
- One panel or one string producing far less than the others.
- Burn marks, discolouration or a burning smell anywhere on the system.
Quick Checks You Can Do
- Compare production on two similarly clear days rather than a clear day and a hazy one.
- Look for new shading. In winter the sun is lower, so a tree, wall or water tank can cast a shadow across the panels that was not there in summer.
- Check for dust, bird droppings or leaves on the glass.
- Read the inverter display for any warning, and note it down.
- If you have batteries, check that the charge settings have not changed.
What Not to Do
- Do not climb onto the roof in fog or on damp panels and surfaces.
- Do not open junction boxes or DC isolators.
- Do not assume every low reading is dirt. Rule out shading and faults first.
- Do not wait for weeks if the inverter is showing a fault.
When the Numbers Still Look Wrong
