Door Not Closing Properly in Your Multan Home? Here’s What’s Actually Wrong

A door that won’t close properly, sticks in its frame, or needs a shoulder-shove to shut is one of the most common complaints we hear across Multan homes, especially as a house settles over its first few years. It’s rarely a sign the door itself is faulty. Here’s what’s actually going on.

The Most Common Cause: The Frame Has Shifted, Not the Door

Multan’s clay-heavy soil expands and contracts with the seasons more than many other regions, and that movement gradually shifts door frames set into brick walls — often by just a few millimetres, but enough to throw off the alignment between the door and its catch. The door itself is usually perfectly square; it’s the frame around it that has moved.

This is why planing down the edge of the door — a common quick fix — often creates a new problem: the door fits again for now, but once humidity changes later in the year, it can end up too loose in the frame.

When It’s Actually the Hinges

If a door has started dragging on the floor or sitting slightly crooked in its frame, worn or loose hinge screws are a common cause, especially on older wooden doors that see daily heavy use. This is a genuinely different fix from a frame alignment issue — tightening or replacing hinges, not touching the door or frame at all.

When It’s the Catcher, Not the Door or Frame

If the door closes flush but doesn’t latch, or the lock doesn’t line up with the strike plate, the door catcher itself may have worn out or shifted slightly. This is one of the simplest and cheapest fixes on this list, and it’s often mistaken for a much bigger structural problem.

How to Tell Which One You Have

  • Door rubs along the top or side of the frame — likely frame movement, not the door itself.
  • Door sags, drags on the floor, or sits crooked — likely worn or loose hinges.
  • Door closes flush but won’t latch properly — likely the catcher or strike plate.
  • Sudden difficulty after a repaint or humid season — often temporary swelling, worth waiting a week before any repair.

We check which of these is actually happening before recommending a fix — our carpenter service in Multan covers door installation, repair, catcher replacement, and lock fitting, all with the same fixed-price, no-advance-payment approach as every other visit.
