Drawer Not Sliding Smoothly: Causes and Fixes in Multan
A drawer that sticks halfway, drags to one side or jumps off its track is annoying every single day. A drawer not sliding smoothly usually has a simple cause, and most of them can be traced in a few minutes once you know where to look.
Look at the Runners First
There are two broad types. Older and simpler furniture often uses wooden runners, where the drawer slides on a strip of wood and wear, dirt or swelling causes the sticking. Newer furniture uses metal slides, either ball-bearing or roller types, where dust, rust or worn rollers cause the trouble. Pull the drawer fully out and see which one you have.
Common Causes
- Overloading. Heavy items bow the drawer bottom and make it scrape on the frame.
- Loose screws. If one slide shifts even slightly, the drawer binds on that side.
- Swollen wood. Wood takes in moisture in humid weeks and swells enough to rub on the cabinet.
- Grit and dust. A little dirt in the track is enough to make a drawer drag.
- Worn rollers. Nylon wheels flatten or crack with age and the drawer starts to wobble.
- A drawer box out of square. The corners have loosened and the drawer sits slightly crooked.
Simple Fixes That Work
- Empty the drawer, pull it fully out and look at both sides of the track for dirt, damage or rust.
- Wipe and vacuum the track so no grit is left.
- Tighten the screws holding the slides on both the drawer and the cabinet.
- On wooden runners, rub a candle or a bar of dry soap along the contact surfaces.
- On metal slides, use a little dry lubricant, not heavy grease, which collects dust.
- Refit the drawer by engaging both slides together and pushing it in evenly.
When the Slides Need Replacing
If a slide is bent, rusted through or has lost its rollers, cleaning will not bring it back. Modern full-extension and soft-close slides can be fitted to many older drawers, as long as they are matched to the drawer depth and weight. A carpenter checks that the cabinet frame is still square before fitting them.
What Not to Do
- Do not force a stuck drawer. You can crack the drawer front or tear the slide off the wood.
- Do not plane or sand the sides without first checking the cause. Wood moves with the weather and you may remove more than you need to.
- Do not use heavy grease or oil on slides.
- Do not keep stacking more into a drawer that already drags.
