Leaking Tap in Multan: Why It Drips and How to Fix It
A dripping tap seems small, but it wastes water around the clock, stains the basin and gets louder at night. This guide to a leaking tap Multan homeowners can fix, or at least understand, explains why taps drip, what to try yourself, and when to call a plumber.
The Short Answer
Most dripping taps need a new washer, O-ring or cartridge. Turn off the water to the tap first, take it apart carefully, replace the worn part with the same type, and put it back. If the tap is corroded, the parts will not come out, or the leak is at the base or the pipe, call a plumber.
Why Taps Drip
- A worn washer. The rubber washer inside a standard tap wears down and no longer seals.
- A worn cartridge in a mixer tap. The internal cartridge wears out and lets water through.
- A damaged O-ring. Water leaks from around the handle or the spout.
- A worn valve seat. Scale and wear roughen the seat so the washer cannot seal.
- High water pressure or scale. Mineral deposits can make parts wear faster.
- Loose connections. A leak under the sink or at the base of the tap often comes from a loose nut or a worn pipe seal.
Fixing a Simple Drip
- Turn off the water at the isolation valve under the sink or at the main supply, then open the tap to let any water drain.
- Close the plug in the basin so no small parts are lost, and put a cloth over it.
- Remove the handle cover and the screw, then lift the handle off.
- Unscrew the tap head or cartridge with the correct spanner and take it out.
- Replace the washer, O-ring or cartridge with the same type and size. Take the old part to the shop to match it.
- Reassemble in the reverse order, switch the water on slowly, and check for leaks.
What Not to Do
- Do not overtighten fittings or force stuck parts, because brass and plastic can crack.
- Do not use the tap while the water supply to it is only half closed.
- Do not ignore a leak under the sink. Hidden water damages the cupboard and the floor.
When to Call a Plumber
- You cannot turn off the water to the tap.
- Parts are stuck, corroded or damaged when you open the tap.
- The leak is at the base of the tap or from a pipe under the sink.
- A new washer or cartridge did not stop the drip.
- The tap is old and replacement is the better option.
