Electric Heater Tripping the Breaker in a Multan Winter

The first cold evening of the year, you switch on the heater and the whole room goes dark. An electric heater tripping the breaker is one of the most common winter complaints in Multan homes, and it is rarely the heater alone that is at fault.

Heaters Draw More Than You Think

Electric heaters are among the hungriest things in a house. A 1,500-watt heater pulls roughly 6 to 7 amps at 230 volts, and a 2,000-watt model close to 9. Put that on a circuit that also feeds a fridge, a TV and a few lights, and the breaker can reach its limit without any fault at all. Breakers are designed to trip in exactly that situation.

Four Reasons the Breaker Trips

  • Too much on one circuit. The heater shares a line with other loads and the total goes over what the breaker allows.
  • An extension cord or multi-plug. Thin cords and loose plugs heat up under load, add resistance and can become a fire risk.
  • A fault in the heater. A damaged element or wiring that leaks current to the body trips the breaker quickly, sometimes the moment you switch on.
  • A loose connection at the socket or breaker. Look for warmth around the socket, a faint burning smell or discoloured plastic.

A Quick Way to Tell Which One It Is

  1. Unplug everything else on that circuit, plug in only the heater and switch it on. If it holds, the circuit was overloaded.
  2. If it trips straight away even on its own, try another socket on a different circuit. If it trips there too, suspect the heater.
  3. If the heater runs fine elsewhere but trips on that circuit with nothing else attached, the wiring or the breaker needs checking.
  4. After ten minutes of use, feel the plug and the socket. If either is hot, stop and call someone.

What Not to Do

  • Do not fit a bigger breaker to stop the tripping. The breaker protects the wire, and a larger one lets the wire overheat first.
  • Do not hold the breaker in the on position or tape it.
  • Do not run a heater through a long, thin extension cord.
  • Do not use a heater with a frayed cord or a cracked plug.

When an Electrician Should Look at It

Repeated tripping, a hot plug or socket, a buzzing sound from the board or a burning smell all call for a proper check, not another reset. Our electricians test the circuit load, the wiring and the connections, and tell you what needs fixing before they begin.

Getting It Checked at Home

Our own electricians visit your home, find where the load or the fault is, and give a fixed price before starting, with no advance payment.
